that's it, its really a suck it and see, it may well be just as bad with the encore authored bluray discs but I expect at least the photo playback to be better. I have opted for the samsung C5500 as it has NTFS support and. Upgrading firmware did not cure either issue. Pictures were displayed in green blocks and you could barely make out the shape of the person in the photo. The other issue was photo playback being useless. Apparently its a known bug that most players stutter slightly when going between transitions within the menu, and a small selection of players actually display black for a second or so (the LG being one of those) It was bluray discs that I'd authored myself using adobe encore. The issue I was having with playback was not with video file formats, for that, the player was excellent. Thank you so much sotv for your detailed reply.

But then why would you buy a 2+ year old machine that has been discontinued for well over a year and superseded by the 5 and 6 series since? P.p.s If you are finding actual Bluray disc playback frustrating that is another issue, and as this machine is an older model, support for it seems to be declining and then that would be a course for frustration and a good reason for exchanging. Some Sony owners are getting very frustrated with Cinavia protection. Personally I will be surprised if you get any better file format capability on any of those sub £200 you are being offered in exchange.

But as with all files there is usually many more than 1 encode of the same file title available iyswim.Įncoding programmes are improved, new codecs are used unfortunately makers of bluray machines don't keep up with them through updates, dedicated media players do. if chapters have been used, a not recognised audio codec or too higher profile has been used.Īs for divx and xvid files I don't play to many but from what I have found it is the audio codec ie AAC that this machines don't like.

I don't know what problems you are experiencing with the machine, but I haven't yet found a file in 720p or 1080p, that I can't play on the machine in a format combination that I know works for the machine, either straight off or running through one of the 2 packages above, i.e.

(LG play as many file types, if not more out of the than most other bluray make under £250 imho anyway)

The codecs it recognises are still the same for the machine today as when it as first released hence some of the more recent encodes won't initially play, they just don't update codecs on any bluray machine of practically any make that I know of.

That being said I have owned a BD390 for 2 years now, I can workaround the file limitations of the machine when I come across an incompatible file with very little effort, using either TSMuxer or MkvMerge both free programmes that will correct the problems with the occasional 720/1080p encodes the machine won't play. You may be better buying a bluray player for just playing blurays and a media centre like WDTV or AC Ryan, which will play a far wider selection of files than any other Bluray machine out there. If you are finding file playback frustrating with the BD390, you are going to be frustrated with any other bluray machine currently on the market except maybe the Dune ones. I don't think any of those machines will play a wider selection of files than the BD390 already does.
